Architects in the metaverse: It’s virtually the same.

There is a lot of buzz about metaverses lately, but what exactly are they? As defined on Wikipedia, A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection.

This is made possible through the use of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and cryptocurrencies. To date, there are several metaverses established that actually sell virtual plots of land that can be developed by the purchaser. Some major brands have established their presence in virtual showrooms to display their virtual products and some individuals have actually established businesses that provide services to inhabitants of the metaverses, and others use their plots of land to build virtual art galleries to display their custom NFT art.

Virtual is a key term here. One definition states that virtual is something that exists in the mind, exists in essence but not in fact, or something created by a computer and only exists digitally.

As architects and creatives, we have been operating in virtual space for as long as we have been designing. In order to create something, you have to imagine it first.

“The ability to foresee, visualize, and create your idea in your mind is the most powerful resource you have.” - George Washington Carver

Once we’ve imagined something, potentially sketching it out on paper afterward, we’re then using the computer and software to create the building, space, or object we first visualized in our minds. Once the idea has been solidified, the traditional process involves developing construction documents so that the design can be built in the physical world. For us, working on projects that only exist in the metaverse will not be much different; we are simply eliminating the physical construction of the building. We are already familiar with many of the tools used to create in the metaverse making it a smooth transition. One way that things will be different is the fact that we won’t be limited to specific constraints attached to the physical world such as gravity & construction budgets, allowing for expanded creativity in the virtual world.

The Sandbox, Decentralland, Crypto Voxel, and Somnium Space are several metaverses currently accessible to date. Are you interested in purchasing land and/or establishing a presence in the metaverse?
