3D Laser Scanning for Existing Conditions Surveys

What is 3D laser scanning?

3D Scan of existing multi-family building.

3D laser scanning provides a high-tech method of capturing the most accurate, detailed measurements from an existing object or building. Most modern 3D laser scanning devices capture both location data as well as high-resolution photos of the space simultaneously. This eliminates the need to measure then photograph separately as is typical when capturing existing information using traditional, more time-consuming methods. Interior scanning is the most common, but there are also several scanners capable of capturing detailed exterior information as well.

Since during the scanning process the device captures every visible surface within range, high-resolution photos can also be generated at any time. Ultimately, the process of 3D laser scanning allows us to create digital twins of buildings, which is a virtual representation of the physical structure.

How are we using this technology?

Gregory Ramón Design Studio has used 3D laser scanning on numerous projects and the data captured allows us to create accurate existing conditions BIM models that become the basis of our design process for projects that involve existing buildings. The scanned data, which remains in the cloud, can also be used as a presentation tool to review existing conditions and participate in virtual walkthroughs of the existing building with clients and other stakeholders no matter their physical location. We can also utilize VR headsets for a truly immersive experience, placing the user directly into the space, virtually.
